Medieval notions of ‘translatio’ raise issues that have since been debated in contemporary translation studies concerning the translator's role as interpreter or author; the ability of translation to reinforce or unsettle linguistic or political dominance; and translation's capacity for establishing cultural contact, or participating in cultural appropriation or effacement. This collection puts these ethical and political issues centre stage, asking whether questions currently being posed by theorists of translation need rethinking or revising when brought into dialogue with medieval examples. Contributors explore translation - as a practice, a necessity, an impossibility and a multi-media form - through multiple perspectives on language, theory, dissemination and cultural transmission. | Le texte arabe n'étant pas conservé, les notions en question sont étudiées à partir des versions hébraïque et latin, cette dernière datée de 1260 [p. 367, 378, ou «1240», p. 354 et 355], conservée dans treize mss et treize fois éditée entre 1483 et 1575; on y distingue trois rédactions, la première elle-même connaissant deux versions dont la seconde, celle de deux mss et de l'éd. de 1483, procéderait d'une révision sur le texte arabe postérieure à Hermann; la deuxième rédaction a connu une division en chapitres entièrement nouvelle et des améliorations philologiques sans recours à l'arabe; la troisième rédaction, dépendant de la seconde version de la première rédaction, se trouve dans des éditions du XVIe s. | Les spécialistes ont longtemps accusé Pietro Pomponazzi d’utiliser la duperie comme une technique pour échapper à la censure de l’Église au sujet de ses thèses sur la mortalité de l’âme et le fondement matériel de la religion. Un examen conjoint du De immortalitate animae et du De incantationibus témoigne non pas d’une promotion de la duperie mais plutôt d’une cohérence entre sa compréhension de l’utilisation politique des fables et des mythes et sa compréhension de l’entendement humain, de l’âme et de la nature de la moralité. Ces thèses dépendent en partie de sa lecture d’Averroès. En particulier, il était d’avis que l’écriture n’était porteuse ni de vérité ni de fausseté au sens strict. Cependant, Pomponazzi s’écarta d’Averroès parce que son rejet de la psychologie était mêlé d’une conception pessimiste de la nature humaine qu’il considérait comme étant éloignée de l’intellection et incapable d’obtenir la vérité. |

This collection puts these ethical and political issues centre stage, asking whether questions currently being posed by theorists of translation need rethinking or revising when brought into dialogue with medieval examples. Contributors explore translation - as a practice, a necessity, an impossibility and a multi-media form - through multiple perspectives on language, theory, dissemination and cultural transmission. Exploring texts, authors, languages and genres not often brought together in a single volume, individual essays focus on topics such as the politics of multilingualism, the role of translation in conflict situations, the translator's invisibility, hospitality, untranslatability and the limits of translation as a category. | En el presente artículo se plantea la posibilidad de que el comentario medio de Averroes a la Poética de Aristóteles haya influido en alguna medida en Tomás de Aquino. Esta hipótesis se presenta a partir de los siguientes datos: a) Tomás de Aquino no comentó la Poética, pero sí conoció el comentario medio de Averroes a esta obra; b) Tomás de Aquino entendía la función de la poesía de modo similar a los filósofos árabes, a saber, como un discurso útil para la educación moral; y c) al igual que Averroes, Tomás de Aquino describe el discurso poético allegado al retórico y al dialéctico y, como tal, útil para engendrar convicciones. |

| Today, the basis of much political corruption can be mentioned in the presence of political morality that is built on political practices free from virtues. According to Averroes, the ethics of political morality/politics ethic provide with hegemonic power. İn the sense of overcoming this, he emphasizes on moral -based policy that takes virtues as its own origin of reference. Averroes, who takes Greek experience in the relation of morality- politics into account, gives extra weight to politics and morality relations in the building period of constitutive politics in İslamic world. As a condition of the sustenance of İslamic world in the political arena, he showed original arche/ metaphysics that refers to the virtues which should be in every area of the life. The understanding of politics and morality that is manifested in Averroes, also express the consciousness of reviving of objective political culture. Bugün birçok siyasal yozlaşmanın temelinde erdemlerden bağımsız siyasal pratikler üzerine inşa edilen bir siyasal ahlakın varlığında söz edilebilir. İbn Rüşd' göre siyasal ahlak / siyasetin ahlakı hegemonik güç sağlar. Bunun aşılması olarak erdemleri kendine referans alan ahlak temeli bir siyasete vurgu yapmaktadır. Siyaset-ahlak ilişkisinde Grek dünyasının siyaset tecrübesini dikkate alan İbn Rüşd İslam dünyasında kurucu siyasetin inşa edilmeye çalışıldığı bir dönemde siyaset ve ahlak ilişkisine daha da önem vermiştir. İslam dünyasının siyasi arenada var olmasının şartı olarak; hayatın her alanında var olması gereken erdemleri referans alan asli arche'ye/metafiziği göstermiştir. İbn Rüşd'ün de ortaya konulan siyaset ve ahlak anlayışı aynı zamanda nesnel bir siyasi kültürün dirilmesinin derin bir bilincini ifade etmektedir. |

These thinkers were from Greek pagan, Muslim, Jewish, and Christian backgrounds and wrote their works in Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin. Still, they shared similar philosophical views of what constitutes the Highest Good, and of the intellectual activities to be undertaken in pursuit of that Good. Yet, they differed, often greatly, in the role they assigned to deeds and practical activities in the pursuit of this happiness. These differences were, at times, not only along religious lines, but also along political and ethical lines.
